Make dreams come true

A world in which less people get ill,
and in which sustainable alternatives are available to help patients
so that they are no longer dependent on
donated blood.

Let’s realize this dream together. Help by enabling life-saving research.

Our dreams

Blood For Life focuses on four research areas: saving lives with Big Data, growing blood, repairing endogenous blood cells, and immune system against cancer.

Saving lives with Big Data

Manjo's dream?

“Making sure that I, my loved ones and the entire Netherlands stay healthy.”

“My mother is a blood donor, just like me. One day she received a message from the blood bank: there was something wrong with her blood values. Following a medical examination, my mother was told that she had an inflamed colon. ulcerative colitis. She had to undergo many treatments and operations. Thanks to her donorship, it was discovered in time and they were able to start treatment quickly.”

With your donation to the Blood For Life | Sanquin Research Fund we can conduct even more research into blood, to warn donors at an early stage that something might be wrong but also to detect new or emerging diseases at an early stage.

This way we avoid expensive treatments or extra pressure on healthcare.

Cultured blood for everyone

Nimisha's dream?

“That a blood transfusion is possible with lab-grown red blood cells. This mitigates the risk of immune reactions.”

“I have thalassemia, a hereditary disease of the blood in which the red blood cells live shorter and are less able to carry oxygen. It makes me tired, very tired. But every three weeks I get a blood transfusion and life literally pours back into me. For the time being, this is only possible thanks to blood donors.”

Nimisha has been receiving blood all her life and is forever grateful to all donors. But imagine that cultured blood could be produced on a large scale? This allows Nimisha to be 100% sure that the blood she receives will not be rejected by her body.

With your donation to the Blood For Life | Sanquin Research Fund can purchase a small-sized bioreactor in order to safely produce cultured blood cells on a larger scale for further research under fully controlled conditions.

Curing people indefinitely

Milka’s dream?

“Getting better with the help of gene therapy so that she herself will be able to make healthy blood cells again.”

“What if you are sick and only 0.001% of all blood donors are able to give you the right type of blood? That’s my reality. Because of my sickle cell disease I regularly need blood. I have developed so many antibodies against red blood cells that only a handful of blood donors worldwide can help me.”

Milka has been receiving blood all her life and is for ever grateful to all donors. But imagine if Milka is again able to make healthy blood cells herself again, so that she is no longer dependent on the blood of donors?

Sanquin Research develops methods that can repair genetic defects in blood-forming stem cells. After returning these repaired stem cells, patients like Milka themselves would be able to make healthy blood cells.

With your donation to the Blood For Life | Sanquin Research Fund can do further research into the complex technology needed to correct the genetic error in the DNA of these patients.

Treat cancer with blood

Hein's dream?

”Ensuring that even more people with cancers that are difficult to cure can be treated with Tcell therapy.”

Just like himself—against all odds—he survived a very aggressive form of skin cancer.

“My life has completely changed. The doctors told me there was nothing more they could do for me, and for two years I was saying goodbye and closing life. Then when you get to hear that you’re cured, that’s fantastic. I’ve started to think differently about things, I really enjoy the moments with my family and friends.”

Sanquin Research conducts research into treatment using a patient’s own cells. It concerns the immune cells that are often present in tumors, but which do not succeed in breaking down the tumors. Sanquin Research, together with the Netherlands Cancer Institute, has succeeded in cultivating these immune cells in the lab and then injecting them into the patient, as a result, the tumor disappeared in some of the patients with a hitherto untreatable form of cancer.

With your support to the Blood For Life | Sanquin Research Fund can conduct more research into this groundbreaking cancer treatment, which will enable even more people like Hein to be completely cured of cancer.
